The new chick...

Hey forum goers!
I am coming to this Serenity event in a few weeks, but I am completely new to this whole LRP business, and this is my very first time (consequently, the advice I have been given is to crew this one, which I am taking with gratitude).

Nevertheless, I am super eager and keen for it all!

Just wanted to ask if there is any advice you guys can give a first timer like me-- maybe something you wish you'd known on your first time, or something you feel is indispensible to making the playing experience noteworthy?

Ok, I look forward to hearing some cautions, warnings, recommendations and stories!

Thanks in advance!

BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID.

I'm serious - the organisers have a cruel & unusual sense of humour.....
...for example:

Ep 2, my first ever LRP i've been to, and i get given a (NPC) crew of inbred hillbilly types for my ship - now that was just pure evil Twisted Evil, funny, but evil....

Ep 3, They try to marry me off to another hillbilly - a situation from which i promptly escape, and marry her/him/it off to my 1st mate.....

Hmm, i'm noticing a recurring pattern here....

In all, good fun, and a great weekend - just unfortunate (for me) that booking closed for this event, before i could get my lot organised Sad

Dan.

Best advice I've ever had is to wrap up warm and waterproof, take a spare set of clothing and don't drink anything that's a primary colour.

Take a complete set of spare clothes, good boots and something warm and waterproof.

And don't drink anything you didn't open.

Turns out that's almost exactly the same advice as Jon gave...
Are we both right, or both the same flavour of crazy?

Going from past events:-
1) Bring two sleeping bags. Both events I've been to had sub-zero temperatures overnight
2) Make sure you've got plenty of warm clothes. A large portion of the good roleplay happens around campfires, at night
3) Bring chocolate. Great for bribes

I will second the advice to bring warm clothes, good boots and not to drink too much.  Bring plenty of spare clothes if you can as well, because if you don't you'll almost certainly fall into the mud and need some.

Also remember to get some sleep, and eat some food.  Sounds like a no-brainer, but you'll be amazed how easy it is to forget about real life when you are larping!  Especially at Serenity, which goes on all night as well as all day.

Bring plenty of enthusiasm, keep an open mind and don't worry if you feel like a bit of an idiot at first.  Larp is a lot of fun, but it is also quite hard to remember all of the rules and calls to begin with, so don't be afraid to ask if anything confuses you.

Did people mention the warm, waterproof clothing?  I'm certain they did, but i'll say it again now.  Last time it snowed.  I was wearing a flak jacket in bed for warmth (well it certainly wasn't for comfort - although see again the dubious parentage of some of the plot writers)

Don't take people at face value. They may be playing a sadistic/drunken/nutcase (delete as of if appropriate).  That's not who they are, they're just playing a role.  Except in the case of drunken.

Sleeping equipment.  I recomend either an unfolding camp bed, or, if you tent won't fit one in, a thick self inflating mattress.  In November, a wafer thin roll mat doesn't cut it.

J. Vaughan, you're in Reading? I grew up in Reading! Woop.

Lol. Or the same person...? "deja vu? It means they've changed something in the Matrix..."

Isn't that just a rule in life, generally? (Gatorade doesn't count. Ever.)

Ok, now, I'm not so up on this reading business, but what I have the feeling of is that what I need is warm and waterproof clothing. Uh, am I right? Not so clear on the advice, you guys Razz *grin*

Thanks for all your great advice!

Boy, I am so psyched for this; it's gonna be GREAT! *jumps around*

Be forward and talk to people; you'll miss half the fun if you're not going out and actively interacting with the players.

Create a character you youself can believe in amd make work.  i had real trouble getting into my character last camp. No problem with the character itself, i just had problems becoming the character.

An as for this next camp....I misse the booking, cos I was supposed to be going to India for 6 weeks. Which fell through. So now now im stuck at home doing nothing!  Sad
