Ok, now we all know that those yokels - er, folks, who live out on the rim & the border worlds - are kinda partial to bluegrass/country music with a chinese twist.
Now that's mighty fine for those uncivilised scum - er, poor underprivileged citizens. However, for us fine upstanding bastions of society who live on/come from the core worlds, surely something more.....upmarket is appropriate?

So, the challenge is to find something that is suitably separate from the "border" sound, sounds "modern" yet not excessively so, and not obviously sourced from current real life mainstream musical trends, or from an obvious source.

So far, the only ideas i have had, are:

1/ Abney Park (http://www.abneypark.com/)

2/ ANYTHING by Basil Poledouris is usually good
(think of the music to the prom dance, on starship troopers)

3/ soundtrack to Akira?

4/ cowboy beebob style jazz/blues mix?

C'mon - i need ideas......

I'm kinda dragging this topic up from the depths, but I read it a while back and just today figured what I could add.

For the Core alliance worlds I would imagine a sound not unlike that of The Polyphonic Spree would be the music of choice.

My reckoning for this is that the music contains just the right amounts of unfocused evangelical background, people wearing simliar clothing and singing in glorious harmony. It makes me think of the school featured in Summer's flashbacks, very much a Blue Sun type of band.

You know, its nice to see I'll be roleplaying with people who clearly have a great taste in music.

Mind you, I'm biased. I tend to think anyone who likes Abney Park has an awesome taste in music, even if they also listen to Steps.

As for my own suggestions, Classical works well for more cultured types. In order to keep things less recognisable, I'd recomend some of Emilie Autumn's violin pieces from the Laced album.

For the scummier parts of the core worlds, I'd imagine theres some nice obscure industrial out there. Can't really think of anything off the top of my head, though.
