Rules query - gunsHiya. I may be looking to come to an event soon, depending when it is, and had a few gun related queries, as I'm not sure what props i'd be bringing as of yet...
First off - rifles. Is it an acceptable blag that a clearly assault rifle prop is the 'civilian version' and therefore doesn't have auto-fire?
Secondly - sub machine guns. Do they exist? If so, what do they count as?

If it's clearly an assault rifle then it's an assault rifle. Same way a melee weapon that is clearly a knife isn't a sword.
Of course you can always purchase the assault weapon ammo for it and just use it single shot with the rifles/shotguns skill.

Ok, we hit a system abstraction here. End of the day we tend to run with the idea that if you want to fire it one handed it's a pistol. It just fires more shots per hit than a revolver.
Although if you want to stay cannon then as far as I'm aware, no, they don't exist.

Cool. I had to check. Most non-military issued 'assault' rifles are single shot only, but then we're 500 years in the future so its a pretty irrelevant point

That works. System abstractions are necessary, and beneficial. Trying to write rules for the vast multitude of different guns out there would get messy very quickly.
Canon wise there are most definitely SMG's in the verse. "Shiny - lets be bad guys" and "hell with this, I'm gonna live" are the obvious ones off the top of my head.
The only reason I ask is I'm likely to play a character with a gun fixation that would make Jayne proud. I just get excitable as to choice. Like to have my options open.
Gods, now I sound like an obsessive fan or an obsessive gun-bunny, or both! Its not intentional honest

One would assume as an assault weapon - if you are intending to fire with any form of accuracy, it would have to be gripped with two hands anyway. One of the reasons the "Schnellfuer" variant of the mauser M98 boomhandle wasnt especially successful, is that it was only good at point blank - automatic fire being uncontrollable, as it was held singlehanded. Incidentally, this fully automatic variant had a fan base within the early airforces of ww1, as at the time it was the only automatic weapon they could fit in the cockpit, their planes being unarmed at the start of hostilities.

Probably. But then I'm of the opinion that while realism is important to a degree, it has to take a back seat to game-play.
On a game-play perspective, allowing mini-uzis and glock 18s to have the same effects as assault rifles seems a touch unfair on the assault rifles.

Not if the player involved plays his weapon in a way in keeping with the physrep - ie, if he uses "spray and pray" mode only. Whilst this is purely voluntary of course, i think most people i have met on serenity lrp would do it anyway, just to stay in character.

I have a phys-rep of the burst-capable M93r as a sidearm.
I use it as just a shiny-looking pistol, same stats as a basic semi-automatic.
But then I do have a multi-barrelled excuse for not wanting or needing to use full-auto pistols...
For true gun-bunnies, pics of my customised 93's (I have a matched pair, squee!) are on the web here.
Desert Eagles are for pussies.
