|
|
On the way home we stopped by Cardiff Gate services where we bumped into some of the Memphis crew (as well as some Relentless and crew members) - hi again guys.
Over a not-as-tasty-as-a-McSkippy's burger the issue of 'Verse knowledge came up - is the 'Verse a single solar system, is it a binary system, how many planets are there etc.
While I'm not sure exactly how accurate these charts can be considered for the sake of Serenity LRP, the maps on http://www.fireflyrpg.com/rpg/maps.html give a fantastic idea of how the 'Verse is layed out and what's there to find. The props page also has some fun articles, such as Technobabble 101: http://www.fireflyrpg.com/rpg/Props_files/Mechanics101.pdf and a quick guide to mandarin slang: http://www.fireflyrpg.com/rpg/Props_files/chineseslang.pdf
For further information, you can look at the the firefly wiki at http://www.fireflywiki.org/ which includes both a detailed commentary on each episode, costume and weapon (because we all love guns) and a detailed if dubious timeline for The War - this is the timeline I base my recollection of events on.
Further information can of course be found in the Serenity RPG rulebook printed by Margaret Weis Productions Ltd, ISBN-10: 1931567506 ISBN-13: 978-1931567503, available on amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Serenity-...ying-Jamie-Chambers/dp/1931567506 but probably cheaper elsewhere.
Anyone else got any handy links?

Actual canonical information is thin on the ground; nobody really talks about it in the series (well, why would they? We don't often remind each other in casual conversation that Europe is a continent in the northern hemisphere of a spherical planet). The most explicit stuff seems to be in the intro to the movie:
| Quote: | Earth-That-Was could no longer sustain our numbers, we were so many.
We found a new solar system: Dozens of planets and hundreds of moons.
Each one terraformed, a process taking decades, to support human life.
To be new Earths.
The central planets formed the Alliance... |
So it's one solar system. And probably not binary (or more); we never see more than one sun in the sky. There was some early speculation that it was a stellar cluster but I don't think that's borne out by observations.
(EDIT: Though this screencap does seem to suggest a second illuminated body further out from the star. Maybe an ignited gas giant?)
Of course, all of that said, I never got the impression that "The 'Verse" referred specifically to the colonised area - it's not the name of the solar system - but rather to the universe as a whole. "Every planet in the 'Verse" is hyperbole rather than patriotism _________________ I don't mean to pry, it just happens |

Trying not to nerd out on this one...
The screencap you give there seems to match up with the maps I've linked to - 10 planets (The core and border) orbiting a star, with another star orbiting further out with (possibly) it's own satellites - the Frontier worlds.
I'm certainly not going to claim that the maps are right or accurate to any possible definition, but what they are is certain. _________________ I am the eternal warrior in the never-ending fight between gravity and the black.

A few thoughts and observations.
There's a map that looks like this, and I think it's official merchandise.
http://www.fireflyshipworks.com/wp-content/uploads/verse-frontbig.jpg I think this is also in the tabletop rulebook. Looks like at least 5 stars there, presumably most of them would look quite small from planets that don't orbit around them.
If the Blue Sun was particularly large, then it could easily be 60 times the mass of our sun, so it would have other stars orbiting around it rather than a pair of stars orbiting around each other, and would clearly be considered the centre of the system.
Saffron mentioned "more than 70 Earths". That clearly gives us a lower number depending on how we want to interpret it. |

There is canon for a binary, a 5 star cluster and for a single-star system.
As I understand it, we use the single-star system, due to phys-rep issues with the other ones.

Mark's hit the nail on the head, until such a time as we can put an extra sun in the sky, we assume a single star system. _________________ "I aim to misbehave..." |

You could at least paint it blue. All we need is a really long ladder and a zillion buckets of blue paint.
