Hi all,
I'll be coming to the next event, sadly only as crew as I only even heard of the event about a week ago! I'm an experienced LARPer but only in fantasy systems and although I'm a huge Firefly fan, I find myself struggling for kit ideas. Has anybody got any good suggestions of places to buy kit/weapons from that are likely to be able to deliver in the next week or so? Anybody got any sweet kit tips they feel like sharing with the new guy? What sort of things would be good for bringing to crew with?
Any advice would be a great help!

Military surplus stores are a great place to find kit. Combat gear, riot padding, helmets, etc, all add a nice touch. However, as you are crewing I'd suggest a few basic bits such as possibly the aforementioned combat gear, possibly look at charity shops for interesting/vintage clothing, most of the stuff you will need (weapons, armour and so on) will be provided. Make sure that you do have something warm & waterproof with you, you'll probably need it.

We have a selection of kit for crew use so just remember a good pair of boots. End of the day, as a sci-fi game jeans and t-shirt are fine as basic kit so long as you avoid pop culture references emblazoned across your chest.

The crew of the TV show have a pretty broad mix of stuff that looks like it's from recent history so costuming should be relatively cheap. Quick hints and tips from me would be:
- "Modern" clothing (stuff you could buy in the shops today) tends to look pretty old and battered.
- Conversely, IC "Sunday Best" clothing (the stuff the characters put on when they want to look posh - probably reflecting the fashions of high society / the core worlds) seems to tend towards the late 19th / early 20th century (Lennon shades aside).
So yes, if you're from the border worlds you can get away with jeans and a jumper, but try to make it look well-worn and dirty. Also, layering is good - a busy outfit with contrasting styles, bits of things that your character's picked up along the way because he liked or added for the sake of functionality, all of it adds character and makes an outfit look lived-in.
Above all else, remember that it's an outfit, not a costume! Everybody should have at least two sets of clothes, if only for wash day...

I tend to go to Primark or Peacocks or any other very cheap clothes stores, buy some combats and t-shirts and then wash them on a warm cycle so that the colour fades. After all, most of the 'extras' costume on the series seems to be fairly tatty modern clothing, with a few military or chinese accesories.
Cheap costume that you don't mind getting totally muddy, wet, and possibly torn up by brambles is the best way to go in my opinion. Middlewood is infamous for turning into a mudbath at the first sign of precipitation, and is located in Greater Manchester where we mostly have rain. Wear clothes that you don't mind falling in the mud in, and bring plenty of them

While i appreciate Jon's enthusiasm, as another member of the game crew i'd like to add one thing to the 4"t-shirt and jeans" suggestion
Bring something warm.
this realy isnt to be taken light, we had snow last year
While we will do all we can for people who suffer the effects of hypothermia, we would much rather avoid that if possible
